The Damon Affair

On June 9, 2006 The Scott Boras Corporation, acting as Johnny Damon's agent ended one of my eBay auctions for a "Damon Sucks" Baby Onesie via the eBay VeRo Program. Take a moment to read about my real time accounting of my frustrating VeRo Experience HERE!

My local newspaper, The Standard Times, broke the Story on June 30, 2006. You can read the original story HERE!

A couple of weeks later, I received an email from Jimmy Golen at the Associated Press. He was interested in doing a story. I hesitated for a moment about doing another interview, but in all honesty, I was really annoyed that Boras targeted me and he was not removing similar items from the internet in general or even similar items on eBay that were positive in nature, such as "I (heart) Damon" or "We Got Damon" items. It appeared to me that Boras wanted to apply his "infringement" claim selectively. So, I did the story.

Jimmy Golen broke the story late on Thursday July 20, 2006. The story went national and became quite a pop culture frenzy. Here are just a few of the national publications that ran the story:

  • ESPN.com - Damon camp cries foul over derogatory bibs on eBay
  • FoxSports.com - Internet baby gear hits nerve with Damon
  • Sportingnews.com - Internet baby gear hits nerve with Damon
  • Forbes.com - Internet baby gear hits nerve with Damon
  • thewashingtonpost.com - Internet baby gear hits nerve with Damon
  • newsday.com - Internet baby gear hits nerve with Damon
  • ... and that really is "just a few". The story was printed everywhere, literally dozens upon dozens of newspapers picked up the story. As you can imagine this resulted in a flood of traffic to my website and hundreds upon hundreds of emails, some supporting me, some condeming me. I would like to share these events with you, but first, let me explain how the "Damon Sucks" phrase came about.

CONTINUE Reading below to see how it all began ...

I have received many questions about why I would put a phrase like that on baby clothing. Let me first state that all of you who think that is an "adult" saying need to get your minds out of the gutter. Around here it means "stinks". The phrase "That sucks" can be heard and seen daily on radio, television and in print. It is not an "adult saying" so stop trying to make it so!

Now, how exactly did my "Damon Sucks" items come about ....

Many moons ago, I met a wonderful man named David. I knew he was "the one". His only BIG flaw was that he was a New York Yankees Fan. How on earth could I marry a Yankees fan, a Yankees/BoSox marriage surely would never, ever work!

Despite my better judgment (LOL!), I married the guy and now we have two very baseball confused children. Are they Sox fans are they Yankees fans? Who knows?

The absolute BEST part of our relationship is our sense of humor and the playful joking that goes on between us. We have watched the Yankees/BoSox battle it out, many, many times in both Fenway and Yankee Stadium.

For those who aren't baseball fans, it's hard to understand, but this is the greatest rivalry in all of baseball. It is the most heated, joked about, and 'keeps you on the edge of your seat' sporting soap opera on the planet today.

At Yankee Stadium fans will chant derogatory things to the Sox and their fans. At Fenway, we do the same. It is all in good fun. Everyone hugs at the end of the 9th and goes home.

The item that got VeRoed had only been up on eBay a few days. It was the first time I had ever listed it and I hadn't sold any. It came about because one Saturday morning I was at the computer and my husband was sitting at the table reading the sports page. Damon has just had some great hit or something or other (who cares? LOL!) and we started joking and began some playful smack talk about the Yankees/BoSox. That's when I uttered the phrase. I opened photoshop, made the graphic, threw it on the baby stuff and prepared to list it.

David and I had a bet. He believed that *NO ONE* would ever, ever buy it. 'Why on earth would anyone wear that?' were his words. Needless to say, I have won THAT bet and we will joke around about it for years to come.

That's it, just a joke.... and if you go to google and type in that phrase, you will find many, many websites that sell similar merchandise with similar phrases. These phrases and shirts have been around for years and years. I personally have an old (1996) T-shirt with a caricature of Wade Boggs and the phrase "Marrrrgggggooooooo".

There was nothing new about mine, except I drew the wrath of Boras.
